Community Outreach

Back to School Project with First Ward Elementary School (sponsored by First United Presbyterian Men) This year Selestine Adams, principal, has identified the essential need as heavy duty electric pencil sharpeners for the classrooms.  Therefore, we purchased 60 electric pencil sharpeners for the classrooms through our special program with Office Depot for $15.00 each.  Donations to help defray the cost of this expenditure, using whatever form of payment you prefer, should indicate “First Ward Elementary School, 2018.”  Members are asked to bring Kleenex boxes for the classrooms and the large pump style hand sanitizer containers.  Delivery of pencil sharpers will follow the schedule for teachers to return, August 16th; and the other items will arrive prior to August 27th, first day of school.  Your continued prayers and concerns for this partnership are always needed.  We thank God for this opportunity!

LOAVES & FISHES - Volunteer Opportunity - First United's designated day is on the fifth Fridays of the month. The hours are from 1:00pm to 4:00pm at First Presbyterian Church. Please come out and help.

Sister to Sister  - a new outreach ministry that needs your support.  The homeless women in our community have very different needs than do the men living on the streets and in our shelters.  To support this effort, we are asking that you purchase toiletry bag(s) and fill them with feminine wipes, tampons, pads and a note of encouragement from one woman to another.  A collection box for the toiletry bags is located in the library downstairs.  If you would prefer, you may make a financial donation and we will purchase toiletry bags and supplies and fill them for you.  Donations may be made in two ways: You write a check to First United Presbyterian Church with a notation that it is for Sister to Sister or you may go online to our You Cared Funding Page and make a donation at

Remember, this is an on-going ministry so your continued donation of feminine hygiene products, cosmetic/nylon backpacks or cash are still needed.  For those who would like to help by writing inspirational notecards, packets of notecards with instructions can be found on the table in the library beside the Sister to Sister donation box. Thank you in advance for support of this ministry on behalf of homeless women in our community.

Habitat for Humanity - Habitat Charlotte has been named, by Habitat International, as one of the nation’s Affiliates of Distinction for its impact on the community and its willingness to adapt to new strategies. First United has been a part of this program for over sixteen years, which has provided 1,300 low-income families with affordable housing since 1983.

This will be our 20th year with Habitat and Central City Church Partners.  We are building two houses again this year located at 4203 and 4209 Howie Circle. The homes are four and five bedrooms. Friday, November 16th is FUPC volunteer site day; Interior paint finish is the scheduled task.  Mark your calendars and plan to join us.

We encourage other members to become involved in leadership roles with this Habitat project.  This is a great opportunity for our church to continually share in community fellowship and outreach!

Meet Remonica

Remonica is one of the few native Charlotteans remaining, she strongly believes that God helped her find Habitat through one of her co-workers. Remonica has three children: ages 19, 18 and 15. While her children will be the first in their family to attend college. Remonica will be the first person in her family to be a homeowner. Her favorite part about the Habitat process has been meeting all of the people and pushing herself to try new things on the construction site.
